During this week, Oculus shared its latest developments in VR hardware, software and content with roughly 3,000 Oculus Connect 3 attendees and hundreds of thousands more who joined online.
Details of the much-anticipated Touch controllers show that pre-orders will begin on October 10 and come bundled with VR Sports Challenge and The Unspoken. At $199 with a December 6 ship date, Touch includes an additional sensor and a Rock Band VR connector.
The team also revealed Santa Cruz, a feature prototype demonstrating inside-out tracking that opens up the path to standalone as an entirely new VR category.
Expanding mobile ecosystem
With over 400 apps available for Gear VR and much more on the way, mobile VR is an incredibly vibrant part of the broader ecosystem. Oculus also announced several additions to the Mobile SDK, making it easier than ever for developers to bring their titles to Gear VR.
Now, there’s also the possibility to start a Facebook Live broadcast from any Gear VR app using the Universal Menu.
Personalized play: Oculus Avatars
Oculus Avatars, a platform feature that lets you customize your VR identity for more memorable interactions. With more than one billion permutations available—from unique textures to clothing, accessories, and more—you can build something that truly represents your own style. Avatars will be available for Rift at Touch launch and for mobile in early 2017.
Mark Zuckerberg Demo
Mark also shared an amazing virtual reality demo on stage at Oculus Connect, with the focus that virtual reality puts people first. According to Mark’s post: “Once you’re in there, you can do anything you want together — travel to Mars, play games, fight with swords, watch movies or teleport home to see your family. See the video for yourself.
